First United Methodist Church Nursery School is a community
outreach ministry designed to provide a quality preschool
education in a warm, loving and safe environment. Our
Nursery School began in 1983 and has grown to three classes
during the school year. This growth allows us to offer three
different schedules including morning and afternoon
sessions, and even a summer camp program. Your child has the
option to attend our Nursery School for two years, we have a
3 year old class and a 4 & 5 year old class. On average, 90
to 100 children participate in our Nursery School each year.
We encourage parental involvement and have many
opportunities to help out.
Curriculum
Our Nursery School program will help your child prepare for
kindergarten by learning to follow rules and how to get
along with other children. These social skills along with
self-esteem and independence are the main focus of all of
our Nursery School children. In addition we also have age
specific themes to help prepare for kindergarten. The 3 year
old class will work on learning colors and numbers. The 4
and 5 year old classes work on learning letters, numbers,
address, telephone number, and birth date.

Daily Nursery School Activities & Field Trips
Our daily routine includes each of the following activities
after your child is greeted at the door by a teacher.
Free time/craft time – Varied toys and games are set out
each day so the children do not get bored. By having
playtime with craft time, the children get help with their
fine motor skills on an individual basis. Children bring
home a craft almost every day.
Treat time – Nametags are placed on the table so each
child knows where to sit. Mingling the children in this way
enables them to make new friends. As each child finishes
their treat, they throw their cup and napkin away and select
a book to read on the rug until all their friends are
finished.
Circle time – This favorite time is used to discuss
weather and the calendar. Everyone recites the Pledge of
Allegiance while the helper of the day holds the flag. The
helper counts the number of children in the circle and then
math skills are practiced to determine how many children are
missing. After singing a song of lament for anyone who is
not there, the children have show & tell time, work on
memorizing phone numbers, addresses, and birth dates or play
the dictionary game.
Story time - Two books are shared each day with finger
plays and songs in between. This time is also used for large
motor skill activities such as action songs, dances, or
musical instruments; introduction to the letter people for
alphabet exposure; and discussion of other “important
stuff.”
Additional time - The final activity of the day depends
on time and circumstances. On some days, the children go to
the Fellowship Hall for more serious physical activity, play
games in the classroom, or watch a video relating to the
letter of the week.
Field Trips - We try to take a field trip each month,
which may include Safetyville, the fire station, the
library, bowling, a picnic, and the pumpkin patch. |
